-News Release from CDC –

Most recently available statistics for births in the United States, 2018:

  • Percent born low birthweight: 8.3%
  • Percent born preterm: 10.02%
  • Cesarean section rate:  31.9%

Low birth weight rates have remained steady, preterm births have increased since 2017, but decreased since the high of 12.8% in 2006. Primary cesarean section rates have dropped by .1% while VBACs have increased by .5%.  While that is good news, it means nearly one third of women are having cesarean sections, many of which are medically unnecessary.
